Not that I missed the start of THE summer event yesterday, I'm just a little late on posting. Anyway: Visitors of last year's festival prayed for a continuation of the finest electronic, black music (whatever) festival in Switzerland and finally the holy wishes were satisfied. The current line-up looks as promising and noncompetitive than the one of 2010 and is again contributing to the uprising festival's renommée. Just in case you missed the whole thing in 2010 (including Theo Parrish's seminal set), think Montreux Jazz Festival in modern and cool again (and without Carlos Santana and Ricky Martin of course) to have a slight impression of what to expect. The one for these nice and warm days in spring when people can't await summer time. Grover Washington performed the monster jam at the Bijou Cafe (Philadelphia) back in 1977 putting a lot of already famous tunes like the straight-forward "Mr. Magic" or the loose joint "Juffure" to another level. Washington calls his co-players "doctors" during the set and this might reflect their almost scientific approach to the sharp-edged grooves. An album that is best played in its full length while barbecueing, drinking wine, awaiting summer...

I'm preparing for a latin jazz night at the moment and scanning the archives for the right tunes. Of course the choice on this album is "Sweet Lucy", a classic uplifting piece of jazz funk with nice piano chords. But also the rest of the album has something to give. With players like Airto, Freddie Hubbard or Patrice Rushen it features the crème de la crème of the late 1970s jazz scene. Not to mention the producer, who was no one else than George Duke. Check the song "Wires" for example with his reduced bass-action or the mellow cut "Wild And Shy".

I recommend this album only for cold and dark winter nights when there is nothing more to loose than the lovely one in your arms and the warm cup of tea on the table. Cologne-based Wegner wrote the tracks originally for some theatre-productions but they function also in a stand-alone-way and unfold their magic without any directed scenery.
